Brunfaut Tower Rehabilitation - 14.063

Complete mission for C & S engineering.

Rehabilitation of the 'Brunfaut' social housing tower (1965). This proposal maintains the existing steel structure, and increasing the original volume by offsetting the main facades and adding several new levels. The existing 16-story tower will rise to 21-storeys with a new height of 62 m. These operations will provide a greater diversity of housing, better urban integration and contemporary standards of comfort and safety.

Specific features

In order to retain the existing structure and foundations, the new floors incorporate a truss structure which creates a bridge over the existing tower transferring the additional loads to vertical elements in the new facade. In order to keep the self-weight of floors as close as possible to to the original low levels, a solution using timber floor plates exposed on the underside has been adopted.
