Footbridge Sion - 15.059

Complete mission for architectural and structural design

The new Sionbridge is part of the master plan designed by a2oarchitecten and intends to create a relationship between the urban site “Sion”, the Valley of the Nete and the natural reserve “Nazareth”. In plan view, there is a strong central axis, which develops itself from the main façade of the old military building, which imposes a strong, classical composition to the whole. The new bridge is located at its very end. The design for the bridge incorporates three aspects : city/nature, axial perspective and limit of the spatial composition. This argues in favor of a bridge with a central structure with a space determining element on the side of the natural reserve. The bridge needs not only to link two points but also to become a destination. Therefore, two long benches have been incorporated onto the central structure of the bridge, which can function as a belvedere towards the surroundings.

Specific features

The new bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with a central structure. Steel is used for its efficiency in the weight/span ratio. The erection is also simplified and the on-site interventions are limited to the maximum. The pylon is in the continuity of the main central beam. To equilibrate the main span, a counterweight has been located within the pylon structure. This avoids the use of a back-stay. By doing so, a spatial, contemporaray structure is created in which several interpretation levels are possible.
