Footbridge Vilvoorde - 16.045

Program

This design and build project is the development and optimisation from the reference project of Zwarts & Jansma Architects. Ney & Partners developed the project and collaborated with general contractor Artes-Rogiers and, contractor De Meyer specialized in electromechanics.

Concept

The moveable bridge across the Brussels-Willebroek canal creates a new link between the centre of Vilvoorde and the new development on the waterfront and the Parc Three Fountains. The structural system is a cabled-stayed beam divided in two mobile cantilevered parts. In order to avoid long ramps, lifts will be placed on both banks. In addition, there are two wide staircases that provide direct access for pedestrians. The essence of the design by Zwarts & Jansma Architects is the continuity of the connection on both sides of the canal. The new design by Ney & Partners took this as its starting point, and enhances the integration into the landscape. Furthermore, it reduces and rationalises maintenance, and optimises the costs.

Specific features

Other improvements have been made compared to the reference design. The main span has been increased to 66 m in order to prevent works in the canal itself. The pistons are used both as motion actuators and as backstays in closed position. Furthermore, we opted to use the lift as a substructure for the terraces, in order to avoid secondary structures. Finally, we reduced the height of the structure by 1.50 m by means of geometric and structural optimisation.
