Feasibility study
The aim of this feasibility study is to provide recommendations and specific guidelines for the development of major integrated infrastructures. The study concerns the proposal for the implementation of two major bridges of strategic importance for the within Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). They will provide connectivity to two key locations that will generate a significant impact at regional scale, on the Mumbai transport network. The two study cases, the Ghatkopar Koparkhairne Bridge (GK) and the Rewas Karanja (RK) Sea Link, will help in connecting the Island city with Mumbai hinterland.
The GK Bridge across Thane Creek, will connect the Salsette Island with Navi Mumbai, linking the western suburbs of Mumbai via Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road JVLR to Thane Belapur Industrial Corridor. This will be an additional crossing point over the Thane creek, between the two existing bridges at Airoli (north of GK) and Vashi (south of GK). The RK Bridge across the Rewas Sea Channel, will support the development of various areas, ports in MMR and allow a 70 km shortcut for local commuters travelling to Alibaug. This bridge also plays an important role in connecting with the southern parts of MMR Region. The study consists of a ‘state-of-the-art’ bridge design, meeting the international standards of technical excellence and aesthetics while taking into account the strong MMR urban and landscape context but also aspects of sustainability, maintenance, ecology and cost efficiency.
