Kruger bicycle bridges - 18.064

Complete mission for architectural and structural design.

The new bicycle and pedestrian bridges over the railway in Hoboken (Antwerp) form a link in an important high quality bicycle network at regional level and a local connection for pedestrians and cyclists. In addition, the bridges are an essential node in linking four very different neighbourhoods: the area called Portugezenwijk, the 'low-value' business activities on Lage Weg, the new eco-effective business park Blue Gate Antwerp and the Hoboken polder nature reserve. The bridge design is therefore an urban link which provides added value for each of these worlds. The project is realized in collaboration with the design office OMGEVING, in charge of the landscape design.

Specific features

The design is conceived as one connected park landscape in which the bridges form an occasional highlight with a clear architectural signature. The isostatic steel beams bridges with structural parapets are supported by reinforced concrete abutments in cantilever. The U-shaped section of the bridge is composed of weathering steel plates. The curvature in plan view, the slanting of the edge beams and the shadow line of the intermediate stiffeners give it dynamism and identity. The result is a sober and efficient structure. The isostatic structure and the internal forces in the bridges are reflected in the variable height of the edge beams.
