Nursery ‘Galatea’ - 11.004

Complete mission for civil and structural engineering.

The renovation of this large mansion includes offices on the ground floor and two duplex apartments on the upper floors. The rear of the property and the outdoor space have been transformed into a nursery for about 50 children. The demolition of an old warehouse at the heart of the old building block made room for the development of a new spatial volume which includes the new upper floors of this part of the building. This new volume is connected to the ground floor of the mansion.

Specific features

The roof of the day care center is a folded structure that carries a roof garden. The roof consists of strips of various sizes and slopes. A parametric study of the roof construction allowed us to address the architectural constraints and ally them to the behaviour of the structure. Massive laminated panels proved very suitable for this application. They combine lightness, stiffness, orthotrophy, aesthetic quality, convenience, prefabrication and sustainability requirements. This concept made it possible to maximize the free space. The vertical structure consists of timber columns placed in line with the concrete columns of the ground floor. The result is a free geometry that adapts to the needs of the internal space. This project results from a design competition which is part of the policy of the City of Brussels to improve the quality of urban life.
