School building Rivierenhof - 13.003

Complete mission for civil and structural engineering.

The design provides for the restoration of the historic building with heritage value and the construction of a new building with studio classrooms for fashion and arts and an entrance building as a link between the historic wing and the new wing.

Specific features

The new wing houses all the studio classes, laboratories and rooms for practical courses and the common functions of pupils and teachers. The building is therefore conceived as one large ground-floor space, based on regular column grid and divided by means of flexible partition walls: an atelier hall. The roof of the hall consists of a post-tensioned concrete slab of 30 cm thickness and is accessible to the public making it serve as the school courtyard and park infrastructure. By cantilevering the roof slab along the long glass facades of the hall, there is minimal presence of the structure which allows the building to flow into the park. The entrance building acts as a link between the existing building and the new atelier hall. This duality is everywhere legible, even in the structure. The ground level is like the atelier hall an open transparent space with a forest of columns. The two next stories are more closed volumes, with load-bearing walls, to merge with the historic wing.
