Shenzhen Canopy - 12.041.01

Architectural and Structural Conception

Downtown Shenzhen, in South China, The Futian District is in complete transformation. The future high-rise luxury shopping and residential complex shows 5 footbridges over roads and 1 canopy structure on the central plazza. Ney & Partners is in charge of the design of 2 footbridges and the canopy. The canopy, which has to temperate the climate during hot summer and be a medium of communication for the plazza, will become the symbol of the new district.

Specific features

The structure integrates 3 technical chimneys as columns. It develops from their 15-meters hight top into a continuous surface. The geometry is induced by a form-finding computation in order to optimize the stress distribution accross the steel network. These structural elements are organized into a set of Fermat's spirals, divaided into ladders, to be prefabricated in workshop, and connected on site. Each element bears a 'leaf' in partly polished stainless steel. During daytime these elements reflect activity on plaza and project shadows, and during nightime they transform into a diffusive screen.
