Traffic bridge Valkbrug - 16.060

Program

Complete mission for architectural design.

Concept

The new Valkbrug, located north of Leiden, provides access to the historic centre from the main railway station. The bridge crosses the Rijnsburgersingel on the Lammermarkt. It replaces a temporary bridge built in 2002. Like the latter, the new structure consists of four independent decks, two for car traffic and two for soft traffic users (pedestrians, cyclists). The project is part of the complete redevelopment of the Lammermarkt. The design and materials ensure the unity and coherence of the whole project. Through specific detailing, the bridge boasts its own character ensuring its role as a gateway.

Specific features

The structure of the different decks consists of alternating concrete beams with different geometries (concave and convex) giving a special quality to the underside, a quality reinforced by specific lighting. The post-tensioned concrete beams with a span of 30 m were prefabricated. The connection with the abutments is monolithic, rendering the bridge integral. The railing, specially designed for this structure, consists of independent cast aluminium uprights. The fixing system allows 8 different positions around their axis, giving the appearance of a random layout such as reeds.
